The Aristos Campus Mundus project “30 years of HIV-AIDS” receives the UD-Santander Bank Research Award

10 February, 2015

The project entitled “30 years of HIV-AIDS. Balance and new prevention perspectives”, in which scientists from 21 universities worldwide took part, and set within the framework of the ACM Campus of International Excellence was awarded second prize in the 10th UD-Santander Bank Research Award organised through the Santander Universities Division.

The book is the result of the first joint research project conducted by Deusto, Comillas and Ramon Llull within the ACM framework on the focus area “Social innovation and social change”, and more specifically, “Social values and ethics”.

This project reports on the disease, its history and new prevention perspectives through articles from a mainly social and cultural approach. It also describes the reality of AIDS in different situations and countries, above all in Africa, America and Europe. The book comprises thirty two chapters that closely examine basic bioethical dilemmas in detail from an interdisciplinary perspective by addressing key subjects related to HIV-AIDS. Examples include global justice; gender inequality; patents in the pharmaceutical industry; the Catholic Church’s position based on Christian solidarity; the exclusion suffered by these patients in rich nations; what it means to have HIV-AIDS in Islamic nations, etc. The conclusions are extremely enlightening to understand the past, present and future of this pandemia.
